Schanzenviertel is one of Hamburg's trendier neighbourhoods, full of street art and bohemian cafes — the ideal base from which to explore the rest of the city. "Schanze" as the locals call it might not be steeped in historic splendour like the Altstadt, or post-industrial coolness like Hafencity, but it's pretty iconic in its own right. Schulterblatt, the main street of the area, teems with street art, quirky boutiques, and cozy cafes. You can check out anything from alternative art to music at the Rote Flora, a hip cultural centre. Even if you don’t catch a show, the colorful facade is Instagram-worthy! Best of all? It's not far from the city centre — really just a 3-minute ride on the metro. Rooms are spacious and modern plus there's an on site restaurant and sauna for relaxation. Families should book one of the two bedroom apartments which can easily accommodate four people. A great base if you want to be near the buzz of the centre, just not in it!
