Hipsters looking for an address that's handily close to all that Athens has to offer should definitely bear in mind the best hotels in Psyrri. With a youthful boho buzz and a bustling after-dark scene, Psyrri has shucked off decades as a district of warehouses and small factories to become the new frontier for young Athenian creatives.
On streets around Plateia Iroon, the neighbourhood's social hub, small galleries jostle for space with old carpentry and leathercraft workshops, alongside cafés, bars, restaurants (cutting-edge and old-school) and small music venues – and every wall is a palimpsest of vivid, ever-changing street art. It's the perfect place for a night out that brings you back to the 21st century after a day spent soaking up ancient culture.
On the opposite side of the Kerameikos archaeological site from Psyrri, Gazi is a post-industrial phoenix, its rebirth driven by the reinvention of a massive 19th-century gasworks where solid stone buildings and huge storage tanks have been converted into the vast Technopolis arts and exhibition complex. The streets surrounding it are foodie heaven, with dozens of restaurants where some of the most creative chefs in Athens cook up menus that combine influences from all over the world. After dark, Psyrri and Gazi rock (so anyone looking for nightlife with a bit of edge will need to opt for one of the best places to stay in Psyrri), and for a dose of heritage to balance its 21st-century vibe there are wondrous relics of the ancient world on the doorstep.
