For the Album

Hotelito Lupaia

  • The Hotelito Lupaia is a totally charming and luxuriously converted farmhouse in a secluded spot in the Tuscan hills, with just eight rooms and suites and lush gardens with a pool and a view. Each of the rooms has been individually restored and renovated to balance out the beautiful original features — like decorative wall paint, beamed ceilings, fireplaces and terracotta floors — with a drive to provide every contemporary comfort. The restaurant is equally charming, and offers cooking classes if you want to take something memorable home with you. You can take scenic walks right from the door, or borrow the hotel’s bikes and explore on two wheels.

For a Special Occasion

Castello di Vicarello

  • Set on a hilltop, with panoramic views over its own vineyards, the Castello di Vicarello is a romantic and luxurious choice, with just seven fairytale rooms and suites. Each is spacious and individually decorated: think stone flagged floors, huge fireplaces, turrets, terraces, and a smattering of gilt. The kitchen produces seasonal fare on request, and offer cooking lessons, while outside are rose gardens, and a spectacular pool and spa.
  • The Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco is a delightfully luxurious converted villa on one of the oldest, and best preserved estates in Tuscany, nestled on a hillside outside Montalcino. Within the complex are 23 rooms and suites, all spacious, beautifully laid out and decorated, with classical Italian design throughout. Plus there's a handful of private villas which have their own terraces and pools, and living space, of course. This is the kind of hotel you don’t need to leave, they have a functioning winery onsite, and run tastings and events, plus cooking classes in the kitchens, which service all the hotel’s dining options. There are tennis courts and a gym, vast grounds, plus a kids club and babysitting service. They’ve really thought of everything!

For a Pool with a View

  • The Villa San Michele is an entirely charming, 15th century monastery turned luxurious hotel, complete with Michelin-starred restaurant, and terraced gardens overlooking Florence — which is also where you’ll find the pool. There are 46 rooms and suites — it was a large monastery, so the rooms are all generously proportioned, with grand details and wonderful historic features. The furniture and fabrics exude luxury; this is one of Italy’s most famous, and expensive, hotels. And they have a cooking school.
  • The Hotel Torre di Cala Piccola is positioned on the cliffs of Monte Argentario, overlooking the Mediterranean, in peaceful gardens that run all the way past an infinity pool, to a rocky cove below. This isn’t your classic Tuscan view, but it’s certainly incredible. The hotel’s 50 rooms and suites are light and airy, with floor to ceiling windows, and in most cases a private terrace or balcony. The restaurant has an stunning terrace too, and serves gourmet Tuscan cuisine, with extra lashings of local seafood.

For Romantics

Castello di Potentino

  • The Castello di Potentino is a classic Tuscan castle, complete with square tower, views over vines and olive groves, terracotta tiled floors and beamed ceilings. The owners are friendly, with great taste in traditional art and antiques — the eight rooms and four apartments are beautifully decorated so that you really will feel like guests in a castle — even the bathtubs are vintage. When you’re done exploring you can relax by the beautiful pool, set amid olive trees.
  • The Villa Pitti Amerighi is another beautifully converted villa in the hills of Tuscany, set in lush gardens and overlooking olive groves and vineyards. The ten rooms and suites, and light, airy communal areas, have kept the original terracotta tiled floors and beamed or vaulted ceilings, but the decor is more contemporary, in pale greys and cream. There’s no restaurant, but they offer a sumptuous breakfast.

For a Rural Retreat

Salvadonica

  • Salvadonica is a carefully converted ancient village set amongst vineyards and olive groves in the heart of the Chianti Hills. The original stone and tiled floors, stone walls, and wood-beamed roof have been beautifully incorporated into the contemporary style of the current building, and the 19 rooms are light, airy, and stylishly minimal; the best have frescoes and vaulted ceilings. As well as a pool surrounded by olive trees, Salvadonica has a tennis court and boules green. The restaurant serves excellent Tuscan cuisine, on a beautiful terrace.

For Foodies

Castello di Gabbiano

  • Castello di Gabbiano was built in the 12th century, and is surrounded by hills, vineyards and olive groves. Unusually it has rounded towers, but otherwise it’s every inch Italian castello perfection. Its interiors have ben carefully restored and renovated to retain the original terracotta tiles, vast fireplaces, impressive ceilings, and ornate paintwork, but the modernisation is clear from the comfort. With cooking classes, themed meal nights and a range of wine tasting opportunities, this is a rewarding pick for foodies.

For Traditional Italian Charm

Relais Villa Baldelli

  • The Relais Villa Baldelli is a charmingly traditional Italian villa hotel outside Cortona, with an enormous pool and gardens. If you love traditional Italian restaurants, with their murals, frescoes, terracotta tiles, and dark wood furnishing, then be prepared to love the real thing at the Villa Baldelli, as its 15 rooms and suites, and spacious common areas ooze old fashioned charm. The restaurant matches its decor in its wonderful traditional regional cuisine, and runs a cooking school and wine tastings. Plus there's that all important pool surrounded by comfy loungers!
  • The Villa Poggiano is a gloriously ornate country villa, set on six hectares of parkland overlooking medieval Montepulciano. It has 14 guest rooms and suites, featuring terracotta floors, exposed beam ceilings, large windows and original details, like decoratively painted ceilings and walls, marble floors, grand fireplaces and tapestries. The hotel restaurant is known for its regional menu, and they offer cooking classes and wine tastings. You can also take art classes. The pool is quite fancy too, complete with statues and stone urns.

For a Spa Break

Cortona Resort and Spa

  • The Cortona Resort & Spa is a complex of several spacious villas, dating from the 18th century, though the spa is state-of-the-art with a sauna, steam room, hammam and long treatment menu and a fabulous indoor/outdoor pool. The main villa is impressively elegant and traditional looking, but the rooms are decidedly contemporary, with gorgeous modern bathrooms. The restaurant runs wine tastings from its impressive cellars.

For an Intimate Escape

Villa Sassolini

  • The Villa Sassolini is an intimate choice, converted from an elegant villa in the Chianti hills, with a wonderful terraced garden that offers views for miles. Its fabulous gastronomic restaurant shares the view, and overlooks a charming pool whose loungers are perfectly placed for soaking up the vista too. While its 15 rooms and suites have retained the original terracotta tiles, and beamed ceilings, they’re decorated with the sort of large, luxurious and linen-covered furniture that many of the interiors magazines favour too. And the bathrooms are generously proportioned. One room even has a private courtyard!
  • Poggio Piglia is a stylishly converted Tuscan farmhouse set on an estate that still produces wine and olive oil— served in the hotel restaurant, of course. We have a number of converted Tuscan farmhouses on this list, but this is one of the most contemporary: during the renovation parquet was laid, the walls were smoothed off, and the beams oiled neatly, so the effect is of a fresh built farmhouse with modern art, and simple, contemporary decor too. The best of the nine rooms and suites have large jetted baths. The restaurant is excellent, and the atmosphere is sophisticated but relaxed. Plus there's an elegant infinity pool with spacious solarium for lazy days.

For a Hotel Pool in a Tuscan Centre

Villa sullArno

  • The Ville sull'Arno is a gorgeous peach-coloured villa right on the edge of the Arno, just outside the historic centre of Florence. The villa’s gardens are beautiful, with a courtyard and pool terrace, and inside the villa’s decor borrows from Renaissance Florence with its stuccos and decorative carvings, but with contemporary comforts and furnishings. Each of the 45 rooms and suites have been individually designed and decorated, so there’s plenty of variety in style and colour scheme. The villa has a spa (with another indoor pool), and restaurant, and offers cooking and art classes. They also have bikes you can borrow to head into Florence proper.

For a Self-Catering Option

Castelleto di Montebenichi

  • The Castelleto di Montebenichi is a fabulous 12th century castle in the hills of Chianti, arranged in its own historic hamlet, and now turned spacious, charming country escape. The castle has been broken up into nine guest apartments, plus common rooms etc., and each is individually decorated and arranged, with some great family-sized options, though only children over 12 are welcome. There’s no restaurant, but all the rooms have self catering facilities and this is an incredible spot for markets, fresh produce and foodie adventures generally.
  • The Agriturismo Vignamaggio is a Tuscan hotel on a working farm, with 25 simply decorated rooms (though some are much grander than others) and self-catering apartments — think terracotta tiles and whitewashed beams. Inside there’s an elegant restaurant with a fantastic wine list, where you can also take cooking classes, plus a games room and bar. Outside is a pool and children’s play area. And everywhere there are vineyard views and plenty of space.

For Great Value

Villa Parri

  • The Villa Parri is a carefully converted historic villa, set in the Tuscan hills above Pistoia, and surrounded by glorious landscaped gardens. The villa now has 13 guest rooms and apartments, all unique, and decorated with classical style, featuring marble, rich fabrics and antiques, so that the atmosphere is sophisticated — while still being family friendly. The pool is a on a sunny terrace and offers wonderful views.
  • The Albergo Villa Marta is a 19th century hunting lodge turned country house hotel, surrounded by lush citrus gardens and olive groves. Inside are 15 rooms and suites, decorated in pastels, with classical style that highlights the original terracotta floors, beamed ceilings and whitewashed walls. The fanciest rooms, and the common spaces have decoratively painted walls and graceful proportions. Guests can arrange cooking, or art classes, and use the complimentary hotel bikes to explore the region. Or just hang out by the charming pool.
