The London

Los Angeles is fast, cool and glamorous, and nowhere epitomises this more than West Hollywood. To the east is Beverly Hills, to the north is the Hollywood Hills. West Hollywood is where you’ll find Sunset Boulevard, Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard, so if you want fine food, nightlife and shopping you’re really well covered. The beach is blocks away, and L.A. is packed with sights and sites. Our Gurus found it a challenge to whittle down recommendations for the best hotels in West Hollywood. The hotel scene is a changeable feast, with new exciting options opening up all the time, but they’ve come up with a list that includes everything from classic Hollywood accommodation to the best value hotels in West Hollywood.

For Classic Hollywood

Sunset Tower Hotel

  • The Sunset Tower Hotel has been converted from an Art Deco apartment block in a fantastic Sunset Strip location. Built in 1929, this is a really cool building, once home to Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra, and made more comfortable by a sympathetic refurbishment. The rooms are elegant, but not too fussy, and there’s a glamorously understated restaurant, a pool perfect for lounging and a lively bar. This is pure Hollywood.

For Hollywood Luxury

The London

  • The London West Hollywood is a sophisticated pick close to Sunset Strip. There are 200 rooms and suites, most with impressive floor-to-ceiling windows and views that are totally worth it. The colour palate is warm and muted and there are some great design pieces in every room, so it feels luxurious but unfussy. The rooftop pool is again a highlight, and the Californian restaurant is popular.

For West Hollywood Style

La Peer Hotel

  • La Peer Hotel is a one hundred room design hotel on the border between West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. This is a chic space, with light, airy communal areas hung with contemporary art and great lighting — so Hollywood! The bar and Italian restaurant are sophisticated, as is the decor, in muted natural monochromes. There’s a chic pool, and you’re surrounded by galleries and boutiques, as well as cool bars and restaurants.
  • Le Parc Suite Hotel is a super chic, suite-only hotel in West Hollywood’s Design District, so it’s one of our picks for best boutique hotels in the area. With 154 suites, it’s larger than a traditional boutique hotel, and the suites are not as varied from their contemporaries as they could be, but the hotel is littered with interesting art, objets d’art and design pieces. It’s also really comfortable, and suites have living areas, kitchenettes and walk-in rain-showers. The chic roof terrace is another real draw.
  • The Mondrian was a famous Sunset Boulevard name, known for Avant-garde chic, but some of the edge has been replaced by cool in its recent refurbishment, and it’s now got a refined Californian vibe and more comfortable interiors. There are 237 rooms and suites, the super cool, borderline notorious Skybar on the roof, a pool with music played underwater, and a popular restaurant. The views are fantastic. Very much a place to see and be seen.

For Hollywood Views

The Chamberlain

  • The Chamberlain West Hollywood is a suite-only hotel, with cool modern design, and a fantastic rooftop pool and terrace which offers spectacular views of the Hollywood Hills and Downtown L.A. plus a popular bistro. The decor features bold lines and angles, and confident geometric shapes, reminiscent of 1960s era Hollywood. And you’re just two blocks from Santa Monica Boulevard, and 15 minutes from Universal Studios.
  • The Petit Ermitage is a charmingly eccentric, suite-only hotel, just off Santa Monica Boulevard. One of the highlights for the Gurus is the rooftop pool and garden, with its spectacular views of L.A.. Below it are 80 suites, decorated with a nod towards Moroccan art and architecture. Some are a good size for families.
  • The Andaz West Hollywood is right on Sunset Boulevard, with a rooftop pool and bar allowing you to watch the sunset set across it. There are stunning views of L.A. from a large portion of the 239 rooms and suites — the higher floors are best, unsurprisingly, from floor-to-ceiling windows. The decor is simple, stylish and contemporary, with some impressive art works, and there’s a moodily lit bar and restaurant.

For West Hollywood Hip

West Hollywood Edition

  • West Hollywood EDITION is the perfect example of stylish minimalism, and great use of the colour green. There are 190 minimal rooms, with huge windows offering spectacular city views, and spacious marble bathrooms. There’s a bar on the ground floor and on the roof (both are beautifully chic), and the restaurant offers simple, delicious fare.
  • 1 Hotel West Hollywood is a hip hotel on Sunset Strip. New and eco-conscious, this 285 room hotel feels like a serene place to stay in a really buzzing location. The decor is cool — in both senses of the word — featuring pale wood, polished cement and plenty of glass. The rooftop bar is quite something, as is the pool. And the gym is staffed by well known trainers. This is L.A.!

For Families

The Charlie

  • The Charlie is named for a famous former owner and resident, Charlie Chaplin, but the logic sort of tails off there, because it's actually a collection of 13 unique, stand-alone cottages reminiscent of an English village. Chaplin wasn’t the only famous resident of these cottages, he rented them out to his friends, like Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Bette Davis and Clark Gable, and the individual cottages are named from this list of celebrities. Each cottage has its own kitchen, and you can call ahead with a grocery list and have it stocked. There’s no restaurant, but the grounds are lovely and landscaped. It’s very Hollywood, and one of our picks for the best hotels in West Hollywood for families.

For Fun

Palihotel Melrose

  • On Melrose Avenue, the Palihotel Melrose is super central, and cool with it. There are just 34 rooms and suites, decorated in a sort of country pub meets city hotel style, with lots of hip details. The restaurant is a local favourite, with southern and rustic influences.
  • Le Montrose Suite Hotel is a luxurious, contemporary choice, just around the corner from Sunset Strip. The 133 suites are spacious and comfortable, with patterned carpet and fabrics. The rooftop pool is a real win, and you’re surrounded by some seriously tempting shopping and nightlife opportunities, which is why we think it’s one of the best party hotels in West Hollywood.
  • The Sunset Marquis is tucked in behind Sunset Strip: it's an exclusive hotel with a bar and restaurant, popular with local celebrities (this is our pick for star-spotting in the 1200 bar). There are 152 rooms and suites, decorated in contemporary comfort and style, and all the mod. cons.; plus two pools and a gym. This is also an easy location for everything!

Chic West Hollywood B&Bs

[image id="845af8bd42ab7289d023255c4f1fc841" size="600x422" als="Hotel 850 SVB"]

  • The Hotel 850 SVB is arguably a B&B, rather than a hotel, but either way it’s small and very chic, designed by interior designer Rota Konig. Among the charms of the 23 rooms and suites are working fireplaces, hardwood floors and marble bathrooms. And they offer mezze and wine on the roof terrace.
