This big black box of a hotel, with sweeping windows and colourful words emblazoned on its outside walls – ‘welcome’ ‘surprise’ – is not for the shy and retiring. From the vintage toys at reception and pinball machines in the lounge to the glass-walled sauna on the top floor with views over the nearby railway tracks, it’s about finding the fun things in life. Rooms are big and bold with wood and polished concrete floors, bright-coloured cushions for gazing out of the huge windows, big New York photographs as wall-art, and neon-coloured rails with funky toys and newspapers. The open-style bathrooms and glass-walled shower cubicles (there are curtains for the shy) may not be to everyone’s taste. There are thoughtful extras, such as a Polaroid camera, shoulder bag and portable speaker, plus the top-floor has a terrace as well as a sauna. The bar and restaurant are colourful, groovy spaces with masses of ferns and pot plants, and food that’s a melting pot of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours. Bike rental can be arranged and you can even borrow the hotel’s Mini for a free four-hour spin. Have fun!
