Alexander House is a handsome country house hotel with a blend of classic elegance and contemporary style and comfort. The high ceilings and grand proportions of the original building contrast with the modern wing, which expanded the tally of well-furnished rooms to 38 and introduced the impressive Utopia Spa.

For a more traditional stay, book a room in the main house, which is also home to the spa which features 25 treatment rooms including three couple's treatment rooms. The modern suites sit in a separate building in the car park, which won’t suit everyone, but they’re spacious, with large bathrooms and plenty of Temple Spa products. Thanks to Google Assist, anything you need can be ordered or arranged from your room with ease.

The Utopia Spa includes a sauna, steam room,  indoor pools, a bespoke outdoor barrel sauna and a gym—though curiously, there’s no treadmill. Treatments from Oskia and Temple Spa are on offer, providing a touch of indulgence.

Connecting the hotel to the spa, the restaurant is light and airy with a distinct bistro style. Adjacent to the dining space is the sitting room, where you’ll find comfy banquettes, wing-backed armchairs, and a roaring open fire in the winter. Reflections Brasserie offers relaxed dining with excellent service, and the truffle and parmesan fries are a standout choice. In colder months, a post-dinner liqueur by the fire in the Library is a cosy treat, while the 120-acre estate’s walking trails provide the perfect way to start the day whatever the weather.

The cool hotel guide: Alexander House Hotel, West

Down by the colonnaded basement pool, water gurgled in a giant hot tub that can fit 20. The lighting was dim; the water piping hot. Roman-style urns stood between Doric columns. Chilly West Sussex felt a long way away: we had been transported to Italy in the glory days of the emperors.
