This is the sort of quietly elegant, small hotel - monogrammed towels, uniformed housekeeping staff - you didn’t think existed any more. Tucked away from the centre in the smart district of Lapa, with its embassies and residential terraces, this 18th-century townhouse - once the home of Portuguese writer, Eça de Queriós - is beautifully quiet though on plenty of bus routes. Bedrooms are gently traditional with soft carpets, comfortable armchairs and the odd antique - decanters of sherry, too - while bathrooms are spacious, often with natural light. Rear rooms have the best views over the courtyard to the river. Breakfast in the walled courtyard is a lazy affair (served until midday) with a tempting array including assorted breads, cheeses, pastries, yogurt and fresh fruit salad. There are two extremely comfortable sitting-rooms with help-yourself drinks and biscuits, plus a rooftop library and - the real treat - rooftop terrace; the perfect spot for sundowners.

Why do people love staying in your hotel? Because guests have attractive choices… Reading, talking, looking at the blue line of the Tagus from the library terrace. Taking tea in the interior garden where the cast iron spiral staircase stands out, eaten up by the age-old climbing plant. As in a friend's home, all the areas of As Janelas Verdes are exclusive for our guests. What is there to do in the area? We suggest taking in the highlights of the city including the Rua des Janelas Verdes, the National Ancient Art Museum, the Basilica da Estrela and a trip on the iconic Tram 28. What kind of breakfast do you offer? Buffet Breakfast from 07:30 H to 12:00H on the Ground Floor (or in the garden during warm season). Continental Breakfast in the room from 07:30H and throughout the day. Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally? Light Meals available. For suggestions of various types of restaurants found in the area, guests may contact Front Office. Which are your most popular room types, and why? The Tejo Room - A intimate room with inspiring romantic view over the Tagus river. Inspired in the Portuguese home style décor. What message would you like to give Hotel Guru readers? An invitation to Romance on the banks of the Tagus in a Small Boutique Hotel in the Historic centre of Lisbon.
