“Experience English village life in this traditional country inn. Rooms are decorated in a 'country' style with soft palettes and furnishings. Explore the leafy grounds or enjoy some gastro pub grub and a pint of local ale at the popular restaurant. Pack the car and the kids and the dog! ”

Hotel review

This sprawling Edwardian building, with its bountiful hanging baskets, dominates the pretty conservation village of Ravenstonedale in the Yorkshire Dales – though, technically, the inn is in Cumbria.

Run by the energetic Louise Dinnes and her cheery team, it’s well-known for its smart pub food; traditional dishes with a modern twist such as roast duck with red cabbage purée and blackcurrants, and crab risotto with samphire. Eat either in the elegant dining rooms or the jolly bar with its exposed stone walls, tartan carpet and collection of stuffed animals. The latter reflects the warm and homely atmosphere throughout the inn. Bedrooms, with several dog-friendly rooms in an annexe, have a light cottagey style with pretty patterned fabrics, an occasional antique and most with views over the village or garden.

In addition, three wood-and-canvas yurts, tucked away in the woodland beer garden, each have a full-size bed and wood-burning stove, and share a private shower block. The large riverside garden is a lovely space to unwind after a day’s exploring.
