Hotel Review
This white mansion house, set in six acres, has splendid views that stretch over farmland towards the Solway Coast. Owners, Angus and Jane Fordyce, genuinely welcome guests into their home where even Robert Burns enjoyed a dram in past times. The atmosphere is informal; log fires burn in public rooms and family photos and auction finds fill the house. The dining room is comfortable and the menu offers a select choice, local produce is favoured and is excellent. Each of the six rooms have their own distinct character; Criffel is the most spacious with an unusual vaulted ceiling and a cosy seating area, Oswald is decorated in Toile de Juy with a delightful sun lounge overlooking the gardens, a chance to soak up the glorious view. If stairs are a problem, Solway on the ground floor provides the perfect solution with the most fabulous bathroom, complete with walk in shower. Cavens House doesn't cater for the late traveller, but sticks to a traditional routine of drinks before dinner which is served no later than 8.00pm, something to bear in mind.
