At the end of a tree-lined avenue stands this Gothic-style château, which is now home, from May to October, to a delightful and grand four-bedroom B&B. The first building on the site was a 15th-century feudal manor, but the château as it is today was built in 1868 and has fairytale turrets and pale stonework with a creeper-covered façade. Steeped in history, Château de Pitray has been in the same family for around 600 years. Set in a 200 acre estate with oak and cedar trees, the gardens are tranquil and relaxing and there’s a pool for a refreshing dip. Tennis, horse riding and canoeing can all be arranged nearby and the hosts will organize wine tastings and a tour of their vineyard, which produces a healthy 240,000 bottles per year.
