Elia Zampeliou's unassuming exterior, on a street lined with boutiques, cafés and tavernas, conceals eight bright and airy suites that combine modern facilities with old town charm. Parquet or polished limestone floors, pale wood surfaces, exposed stonework and floaty white drapes set the tone. Suites have double or twin beds (with spotless linen and polka-dotted spreads) and a separate sitting area. Some have balconies overlooking the harbour, others look out over the very heart of the old quarter. Perks include espressso machine and minibar. Marble and limestone bathrooms come with bathrobes, slippers, and more posh toiletries than guests are likely to consume during a shorter stay. Breakfast – a local array of yoghurt, honey, fresh-pressed orange juice, pastries, preserves, cheese and olives – is served (until 11am) in room or on a little roof terrace which doubles as a bar in the evening, when it looks out over the bright lights of the harbour. Unlike many small Chania hotels (where staff tend to vanish after breakfast), Elia Zampeliou's reception is staffed all day.
