Hotel Review

Campeche, a UNESCO-listed colonial town on the Gulf of Mexico, is the perfect setting for a luxury hacienda hotel. Steeped in history, Campeche plays host to epic Spanish Golden Age ruins, pretty beach promenades and mouth-watering seafood restaurants. Coopting a troupe of heritage properties in the heart of the town centre, this Marriott hotel offers an achingly beautiful ode to colonial-era Mexico. The buildings which make up the hotel have lived a number of incarnations, from champagne store to soap factory. The clash of styles between each property makes walking into this hotel feel like entering a museum dedicated to 17th-century Spanish colonial architecture. An elegant colonnade terrace borders one side of the hotel's exterior, while inside a half-crumbling ruin of a wall reveals a bleu celeste swimming pool which winds through half the property, under roofs and out into tropical gardens. Guestrooms have wonderfully high ceilings, many with original exposed wooden beams. Skylights in the bathrooms allow in natural light and feature a patio-style wash area. Heritage tiles are cool underfoot in the suites and heavy wooden shutters keep out the worst of the tropical heat. A hammock is strung across the room at night for more adventurous guests who might want to experience the classic approach to resting in this part of the world. Excellent amenities complete the luxury experience this hotel has to offer. The rustic-chic spa provides treatments in a hidden nook of the hotel with rich Mayan-yellow walls; get an in-suite massage or relax in the spa's solarium after a body wrap. After your pampering, refuel with a meal at the hotel's seafood restaurant which overlooks the verdant gardens and pool. On weekends, head up to the rooftop bar for cocktails and enjoy excellent views over the original city walls. A sophisticated getaway full of Old World charm.

Mexican hotels from a golden age

The latest addition to the Luxury Collection haciendas opened in 2004 and is a series of gracious town houses which has survived various incarnations since the 17th century - including those of soap factory and store for French Champagnes.
