Hotel Review
Found in the buzzy Santos neighborhood, Casa Chafariz is heaven for design mavens. Its oh-so-Portuguese, fire engine red exterior peers out over the eponymous Chafariz da Esperança, where a pretty fountain has trickled since 1760. A fairly recent renovation has kept all the authenticity of its original structure in the five serviced apartments; restored ceilings and rustic support beams add delightful character to the mid-century features set out in cool, minimal colourways. One thing to note: though there is a lift, some rooms are only accessible via a steep staircase (welcome to Lisbon). Popping to the market then preparing a light lunch atop the marble counters, makes you feel like a local — particularly when the friendly concierge can point you to the very best produce (plus, shops, bars and cafes — these days the city is brimming with trendy spots to spend your Euros). If you’re looking for a super relaxed stay, strolling distance (uphill, in some cases!) to must-see areas like Chiado, Bairro Alto, Santa Catarina and Principe Real — this is your spot.
