Opposite Shakespeare’s New Place, where the bard once lived, this listed Tudor building is now a boutique hotel that retains its historical heart, while adding in modern touches. Rooms are either original Tudor rooms, complete with wooden beams and sloping floors, the Georgian Townhouse, still historical but with a different era character, and contemporary rooms which are found in the new wing and bring design right up to date. The Woodsman, the hotel’s restaurant, is an experience in food theatre. As a drinks trolley is wheeled from table to table, cocktails being mixed while you wait, chefs prepare and cook deer, wild boar, lamb and beef in a wood fired oven and charcoal grill right there in front of diners. They’re big on meat here, having their own butchery to prepare everything fresh, but there is always one vegetarian option on this seasonal changing menu.
