Hotel review

Another lovely Basque village and another three-generation family hotel, this one distinguished by its Michelin-starred, market fresh food. Xavier and Stéphane took over from their parents, who had in turn taken over from their mother’s parents, Marie Louise and Emile Ithurria, who had bought the 1657 red and white farmhouse in 1962. The spacious dining room, adorned by huge gleaming bottles of Armagnac, sets the tone and is the heart of the hotel (there is also a simple bistro for table d’hôte lunches). Bedrooms are straightforward, clean and simple, with comfortable beds covered in crisp white linen. Best are the family apartments sleeping five. There’s also an attractive outdoor swimming pool.
