It's all about location at this surprisingly appealing hotel. La Fauceille is an ideal étape – easy to find, just off the autoroute, 10km (6.4 miles) from Perpignan-Rivesaltes airport. It's clear as soon as you arrive that La Fauceille is a cut above the run-of-the-mill. Don't be put off by its slightly humdrum (but, for drivers, very convenient) site, next to car and furniture showrooms on Perpignan's southern outskirts. Inside its precincts, guests find a poolside courtyard screened from the outer world by palms. Within the two-storey building, rooms have mini-terraces. Those overlooking the pool have more attractive views of pool and Pyrenean peaks beyond. Standard rooms are compact but well-designed, with perks including minibar, free wifi, bathrooms with full-sized tub, robes and slippers. The colour scheme is a muted mix of off-white, tan, green and brown. Le 860, the hotel's restaurant, punches above its weight, with an unpretentious but tasty carte that ranges from prawns in anis to gourmet burgers. Most of the year you can enjoy your buffet-style breakfast by the pool, but it can also be served in your room.
