Classic country house hotel, superbly run on traditional lines but with two extra dimensions: a fabulous spa and friendly equestrian centre for riding lessons and hacking out over the hotel's vast parkland. Slightly reverential, particularly in the dining-room, but Hywell Jones’s food is exceptional and worthy of serious consideration and now you can contrast the experience by eating in the spa's lively new Brasserie with kitchen open to view. Excellent with children. Lavish decoration in the public rooms plus beautiful, calming bedrooms (don’t disdain the rooms around the pretty courtyard). Very spoiling; great for a family celebration.

"This is the Rolls-Royce of country house hotels; a well-oiled machine that glides almost silently down the years. There’s so much in which to indulge in this munificent other world just outside Bath."
