“Overlooking the sea, close to the English-Scottish border, this gem of a Georgian manor house has been carefully modernised without losing its charm and elegance. Bold seaside colours, a handful of hot tubs, smart dining and an airy conservatory make for a relaxing stay.”

Hotel review

Less than a mile from the Scottish border, England’s most northerly hotel is well-hidden though only a minute from the A1 north of Berwick-upon-Tweed. A charming, rosy-pink Georgian manor house, it looks out to the North Sea, albeit a railway line and caravan park lie in-between (though at a lower level). But there’s direct access to the coast path. Interiors have been given a bold makeover – deep-blue walls, white-shuttered windows, sea-green and plum velvet chairs and sofas – yet still retain their Georgian elegance. Bedrooms, too, have a modern freshness that still nods to the manor’s heritage and coastal location: panelling and plasterwork mix with soft colours and striking feature walls. All have large, boldly tiled bathrooms. A few have hot tubs: some are in private gardens; others are a feature of the wood-clad ‘garden pods’ tucked amongst trees in the large lawned gardens. With a cleverly designed central bar, that serves both the cocktail bar and the lounge, plus aconservatory and long sheltered terrace, there’s plenty of space for guests to relax. Food served in the smart though unstuffy restaurant is Modern British; occasionally over-ambitious but nicely presented and served. Location aside – sunrise over the sea, summer swifts swooping over the gardens – staff are the hotel’s biggest asset: cheery, friendly and with a genuinely warm welcome.
