Hotel review

Nestled within expansive botanical gardens on the hills surrounding Funchal, this small luxury hotel is housed in one of the most renowned quintas on Madeira. Dating to the 18th-century, the property retains many original architectural features and is brought to life by the gardens which surround it, containing ancient trees and over 500 different plant species. Inside the hotel, elegant parquet flooring runs throughout the reception rooms. The signature suites are in the quinta itself while the main body of guest rooms are in a discreet and sympathetically designed modern wing with wide corridors adorned with pen and ink maritime watercolours and flower paintings. All the rooms are classically dressed, featuring antique furniture, plush carpets, luxury linens, private balconies with garden views and marble bathrooms with Prija soaps. Delicious breakfasts and dinners are served in the quinta, either al fresco on the verandah surrounded by sweet smelling plumbago, frangipani and hibiscus or in the Pink room or the traditional Beresford dining room. The hotel has both outdoor and indoor swimming pools; the outdoor pool is large and benefits from the Colombo Bistro for drinks, evening sundowners and lunches of succulent local ingredients, cooked simply. A tranquil, luxurious and value for money hideaway in a stand-out setting, great for families and couples alike.
