Hotel Review

This country-pub- with-rooms, originally an 18th-century coaching inn, is part of the Lowther family estate, the main benefit of which is that it’s guaranteed excellent produce from the family’s farms (rare-breed pigs, shorthorn cattle) and the kitchen garden at the family home, Askham Hall, (now a restaurant-with-rooms). Indeed, the pub’s stylish and skilful cooking is one of its main draws. Interiors have a smart but casual contemporary-country feel with flagstone floors, cream-washed walls, hop-hung beams, rough wood tables and a scattering of leather armchairs. Bedrooms have a fresh, uncluttered feel with pale colours, simple blinds and a well-chosen piece of antique or vintage furniture. Neither bedrooms nor bathrooms are large (apart from the family rooms) but you’ll be out exploring the Lakes - it’s well-placed for the north-eastern areas; Ullswater just 10 minutes - or lingering in the bar after a tip-top supper, so unlikely to mind. Bear in mind, front rooms have views over fields but also traffic noise; rear rooms overlook houses and are quieter.

Why do people love staying in your hotel?
What makes the George and Dragon so special is that its source of inspiration, history, passion and produce comes from the owners family Estates, right on its doorstep, where food has been produced for more than 800 years. We grow and rear as much of our own produce as possible at our own gardens and surrounding fields at Askham Hall (where the owner Charles Lowther grew up) and is just a couple of miles from the George and Dragon.

What is there to do in the area?
Visit the Lowther family Estate and Castle and gardens, within an easy walk or short drive from the George and Dragon.
The Lowther family has five miles of private salmon and trout fishing along the idyllic River Eden available for guest use, as well as a beautiful stretch on the River Lowther, famous for its dry fly upstream brown trout.

What kind of breakfast do you offer?
Full English Estate breakfast

Do you offer other meals? And can you recommend good places to eat out locally?
Lunch and dinner. Alternatively visit our nearby sister establishment Askham Hall for dinner.

Which are your most popular room types, and why?
Superior rooms - spacious and comfortable and tastefully decorated yet value for money

What facilities do you have for children and can you fit extra beds in your rooms ?
Family rooms, interconnecting rooms. Extra beds and cots are also available.
