“Delightful gastropub with comfortable rooms that offers a great base for people staying in the Northern Lake District. Delicious food served in the restaurant and plush bedrooms make a great choice for people wanting to explore nearby landmarks such as Ullswater and Keswick.”

Hotel review

This country-pub- with-rooms, originally an 18th-century coaching inn, is part of the Lowther family estate, the main benefit of which is that it’s guaranteed excellent produce from the family’s farms (rare-breed pigs, shorthorn cattle) and the kitchen garden at the family home, Askham Hall, (now a restaurant-with-rooms). Indeed, the pub’s stylish and skilful cooking is one of its main draws. Interiors have a smart but casual contemporary-country feel with flagstone floors, cream-washed walls, hop-hung beams, rough wood tables and a scattering of leather armchairs. Bedrooms have a fresh, uncluttered feel with pale colours, simple blinds and a well-chosen piece of antique or vintage furniture. Neither bedrooms nor bathrooms are large (apart from the family rooms) but you’ll be out exploring the Lakes - it’s well-placed for the north-eastern areas; Ullswater just 10 minutes - or lingering in the bar after a tip-top supper, so unlikely to mind. Bear in mind, front rooms have views over fields but also traffic noise; rear rooms overlook houses and are quieter.
