Salta Province is located in the northwest of the country near the Tropic of Capricorn, and boasts amazing landscapes of mountains, rivers and valleys, with a wide range of climates due to the variation in altitude across the province. To the north it borders Bolivia and Paraguay and to the west lies Chile. Before the Spanish conquest, numerous native peoples lived in the valleys here, so consequently the cultural mix of peoples in this region is more varied than further south, and the province is home to some of Argentina's oldest cultural traditions.
Salta might not be on the typical visitor itinerary, but it's well worth a detour, if only for its big skies and pure air. The countryside is home to a great selection of estancias and country house hotels and fincas, while Salta itself is a beautiful city, with an unusually large number of well-preserved colonial buildings. It's also gateway to the Andes.
Below, we've chosen the best places to stay in Salta Province, including some spectacular estancias, boutique fincas, and design hotels. For the two most visited cities of the province, check out the best places to stay in Salta, and the best places to stay in Cafayate.
