About Rottnest Island
Just off the coast of Western Australia and particularly near to laid-back Fremantle sits spectacular Rottnest Island. Originally used for meetings and ceremonies by the Whadjuk Noongar people, who refer to the island as ‘Wadjemup’ — meaning ‘place across the water where the spirits are’ — this low-lying slice of sand has a long and turbulent history. Later named ‘Rottnest Island’ by Dutch sailors who mistook the quokka population for rats, the island was used for agriculture by the British, as a military site and as a forced labour camp. Now a spectacular destination for wildlife and natural landscapes, it’s also an important site of memory for Australians. Our pick of the best places to stay in Rottnest Island are ideal whether you want to relax on the beach or get out and about exploring.
Take a ferry across from Perth or Fremantle to spend your days cycling and trekking across the island, where white sands surround tidal pools and glittering clear waters. Guided walking and cultural tours are a fascinating way to delve into the island’s past — particularly when led by Noongar elders — and the Wadjemup Museum is not to be missed. Reconciliation initiatives are ongoing, and this is an important site of Aboriginal history.
Other sites of interest include Oliver Hill, a battery built to defend Fremantle Port from attack in 1937, which now promises panoramic views. Follow sandy cycling tracks, dive and snorkel amongst shipwrecks and reefs, or ride the waves as you hone your surf skills. The island’s quokka population is iconic, and Rottnest is a Class A Reserve with six unique ecosystems. Discovering these is a key part of the island experience — and the teams at the best places to stay on Rottnest Island will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
