About Field

Field is in Canada’s Yoho National Park. A settlement of less than 200 souls, it is two and a half hours drive from Calgary on the Trans Canada Highway. Our pick of the best places to stay in Field offer luxury and relaxation of the ‘get away from it all’ variety!

This Rocky Mountain village was established in the late nineteenth century as a camp for workers on the Canadian Pacific Railway and was originally known as ‘Third Siding’. When the route was completed in 1885 the company built a smart hotel here with a view to encouraging tourists to the area.

The village has a variety of quaint gift shops, restaurants and places to stay and there is a thriving artistic community from painters to potters to musicians.

Yoho National Park, which became a world heritage site in 1984, has its administrative offices here. The park itself has a wealth of wildlife, including; timber wolf, moose, elk, cougar, lynx, grizzly and black bear to name but a few.

The Emerald Lake, the largest of the park’s 61 lakes is spectacularly beautiful and an absolute "must-see"!

Also of interest may be the spiral train tunnel through Cathedral and Ogden mountains or the Takakkaw Falls - the third tallest in Canada.

In winter Field becomes a playground for skiers and snow-boarders - it's located between Lake Louise and Kicking Horse. For those who prefer cross country skiing, there are trails from the village. Other winter activities include snow-shoeing and dog sledding......there really is something for everyone!
