About Grand Bahama

The northernmost of the Bahamian islands, Grand Bahama is just a 2.5-hour ferry from Florida’s Fort Lauderdale, and has a far more American feel than its southern counterparts. A popular destination for tropical holidays as a couple or with friends and family, Grand Bahama boasts beautiful beaches, great diving opportunities, and a tremendous variety of lively restaurants, bars and shopping centres. Accommodation options range from simple inns to luxurious beach resorts, fit for a whole array of tastes and budgets. The best places to stay in Grand Bahama tend to be near Freeport, but one of our favourite spots is tucked towards the island’s more tranquil northern tip.

Freeport itself can feel like a bit of a tropical playground — it’s perfect for partygoers and great for dipping into if you’d like a lively evening out or a day's shopping. Close to Freeport, the wonderfully lush Garden of the Groves is a brilliant place for a scenic stroll. Explore the island’s coastline for stunning secluded coves, as well as big-hitting beaches such as Gold Rock Beach, where some of ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ was filmed.

Nature lovers will delight in discovering the island’s many national parks, including Lucayan — home to an impressive network of underwater limestone caves — and the 100-acre Rand Nature Centre. These wildlife preserves are excellent for hiking and birdwatching. If it’s spectacular diving and snorkelling that you’re after, head to Peterson Cay National Park, accessible only by boat.

Little ones, on the other hand, will love the Pirate's Cove Zipline & Water Park, as well as a multitude of water sports, including snorkelling, sailing, kayaking and swimming as a family. Many of the best places to stay on Grand Bahama can organise family-friendly activities and excursions too.
