About Les Andelys
Deemed by many to be one of the most enchanting spots in northern France, Les Andelys is made up of two riverside communities — Petit-Andely and Grand-Andely — once divided by marshland and later connected during the French Revolution. Perched in a crescent-shaped curve of the Seine River, modern-day Les Andelys boasts a beautiful natural setting as well as a rich and intriguing history. Accommodation options range from cosy B&Bs to heritage residences, with the best places to stay in Les Andelys offering an authentic taste of Normandy’s culture and cuisine.
The hillside remains of the imposing medieval Château-Gaillard, built by Richard the Lionheart in 1196, have dominated the town’s skyline for over 800 years. Clamber up for a guided tour and spectacular views — this is the perfect place to get your bearings as you begin to explore. History buffs should also admire the Collegiate Church of Our Lady, and a number of impressive buildings in the Grand Andely district, which was once a key Roman city. Catch a concert at the Salle des Fêtes aux Andelys, or venture slightly out of town to see the World War II Musée de Tosny, a short drive away.
For laid-back riverside strolls, look to Petit Andely, originally a fishing village on the Seine. You’ll also find great fishing, hiking, cycling and horse riding in the area. Many of the best places to stay in Les Andelys have helpful teams and friendly owners, eager to organise sightseeing trips and activities for couples, families or friends — you'll be spoilt for choice!
