About Ottrott

Nestled in the heart of the Alsace Wine Route and just a few miles from picturesque Obernai, Ottrott is famous for two things: the countless ruined castles which surround the town, and its Pinot Noir — Rouge d'Ottrott. A brilliant destination for history buffs and foodies, this pretty community dates back almost a thousand years. Charming and characterful, its accommodation options offer an inviting base for couples, friends or families with a range of tastes and budgets, from simple B&Bs to luxury hotels with all the bells and whistles. Check out our list of the best places to stay in Ottrott as you start planning your trip!

Rising to prominence in the 13th Century with the construction of castles like Chateau du Birkenfels and Chateau de Dreistein, whose names highlight the intermingling of Frankish, French, Germanic and Flemish, Ottrott will delight heritage enthusiasts. Admire the mountain monastery of Mont-Saint-Odile, stroll the streets of lovely medieval Obernai, known for its half-timbered houses, and step into the striking 12th-century Church of St. Nicholas. The region’s ruined châteaux, too, are well worth exploring. Keen hikers can follow trails through the Vosges Mountains or the Forest of Obernai, whilst cyclists will find scenic paths and birdwatchers or kayakers can unwind on the river.

Most visitors are drawn to this region by its wineries, and you’ll find a plethora of excellent tours and tastings to enjoy in the region. Our pick of the best places to stay in Ottrott also boast terrific restaurants — perfect for kicking back with a glass of locally produced Rouge d'Ottrott.
