About Roanne

Famous as a foodie hotspot, Roanne is a charming town on the banks of the Loire River. It’s a popular destination for gastronomy, culture and outdoorsy activities, making it a brilliant choice for couples, families and friends looking to discover the Auvergne region. Once an important point on the riverine trade route between Paris and the Mediterranean, Roanne grew wealthy with the export of wine, textiles and ceramics. It was also one of the first towns in the area to have a railway station, continuing to thrive during the Industrial Revolution. Modern-day visitors can admire a plethora of historic landmarks, including the Saint-Etienne Church, the Saint-Maurice Fortress, and the Saint-Maurice Tower, which offers superb views of the Loire. The Musée des Beaux Arts et d’Archéologie Joseph-Déchelette and the Musée Alice Taverne are fabulous, whilst the old port is well worth a wander.
