About Patmos
The greenest and most famously tranquil of the Dodecanese, Pátmos is a bewitching island of verdant hills and charming historic villages framed by the glittering waters of the Aegean Sea. Peaceful and spiritual, this is a wonderful destination for independent explorers, romantic couples or keen hikers. Accommodation options range from simple guest houses to indulgent boutique hotels, with the best places to stay in Pátmos offering sensational sea views.
Pátmos has been a site of pilgrimage for centuries, home to the cave in which St John reputedly experienced the visions which inspired the Book of Revelations. Pilgrims still congregate in Chora, the mountaintop village closest to the cave, where you will also find the 11th-century Monastery of St John, with its frightening friezes depicting hell’s demons. Chora itself is lovely, with lively tavernas, chic boutiques and galleries aplenty. It’s also a great base for hikers, who can follow walking trails straight from the village into the mountains.
For more of a buzz, make your way to the stylish coastal town of Skala. You’ll find trendy restaurants and bars specialising in seafood and Greek wine clustered close to the harbour, perfect for rounding off days of adventure. Beachgoers, on the other hand, will adore the golden sands of Psili Ammos beach and of nearby Marathi Island. Don’t miss seeing the windmills of Pátmos before you catch the ferry onwards to gorgeous Kos, Leros or Symi. You’d be forgiven, of course, for simply hiding away at one of the best places to stay in Pátmos — they’re not easy to leave.
