About The Amalfi Coast
The Amalfi Coast is an A-list travel destination if ever there was one. Not a destination for A-list stars, thought it is that too, but a destination so invitingly beautiful on so many different levels that to see a photo of the region may easily spark a life-long devotion. And the best places to stay on the Amalfi Coast have the same magnetism! The region is home to some of the best hotels and restaurants in Italy, and there’s no shortage of fantastic places to stay, whether you’re looking for a simple, relatively affordable B&B or guesthouse, or some seriously five-star personalised, private pampering.

UNESCO is in love too, calling the Amalfi Coast an ‘outstanding example of a Mediterranean landscape’, but the coastline’s appeal goes beyond the drama of verdant mountains plunging into bright turquoise sea, because the region’s centres really add to the appeal. One of the great challenges of the Amalfi Coast is working out which to pick because there are some seriously gorgeous options. Positano, with its colourful stacks of architecture, is the darling of location scouts and postcard photographers; while polished hilltop charmer Ravello has both the views and the famous, and romantic, literary credentials. Clifftop Sorrento has miraculously survived the the influx of tourists; Amalfi itself is a central coast delight, with white-washed alleyways, flower-filled balconies and a sandy beach; Maiori is a great choice for families with its large beach; Conca dei Marini boasts a stunning location and has an exclusive feel to it; and Praiano is the town to visit if you like things a bit quieter — most people head on to neighbouring Positano.
Wherever you stay, the Amalfi Coast is a true beauty from every point of view, ideal for sailors and beach-lovers, historians, romantics, families, hikers and foodies, there’s plenty to please them all. Just don't forget that this is an incredibly popular destination. So if you want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in the Amalfi Coast during the peak summer months, do your homework and book well ahead!
The Best Places to stay on the Amalfi Coast
For A-List Luxury
- Ravello’s Belmond Hotel Caruso has hosted Greta Garbo and Jackie Kennedy, and its glamour is straight from a classic movie set. The bones of the hotel date from the 11th century, but among its many upgrades is a recent $30 million restoration job, during which the old fashioned luxuries and elegance have been polished to perfection. Expect perfect Mediterranean cuisine served inside and out, an infinity pool that seems to hang in mid-air, spa treatments to rival anything you can imagine, and gorgeous decor. While it might not be an obvious choice for families, The Caruso also has an excellent kids’ club.
- There are so many fantastic hotel views on the Amalfi Coast, but Amalfi’s Hotel Santa Caterina is extra specially blessed. The white crescent of 66 rooms and suites is at the top, cut into the cliffside — all with white decor and either a balcony or vast windows overlooking the water. The restaurants, pool and citrus gardens run down the side of the cliff towards a private beach — which can also be reached through a glass lift that travels directly through the cliff. Luxury defined!
For the Photo Album
- Colourful Le Sirenuse overlooking gorgeous Positano is an 18th Century palazzo turned family-run hotel, and it’s just about Amalfi perfection. We love the many lemon-scented terraces and private balconies — all 58 rooms and suites have one — and the views of Positano and the coastline. We also love the Neapolitan and Venetian antiques and artworks, the vaulted ceilings and the handmade floor tiles. Not forgetting the Michelin-starred Neapolitan restaurant, La Sponda, where every evening no less than 400 candles are lit. What could be more romantic or photogenic?
For the Views
- Il Piccolo Sant'Andrea is a gorgeous, cliffside hotel overlooking the spectacular Amalfi Coast in both directions, from numerous terraces and balconies, covered in lush greenery. Inside are just 27 rooms and suites, bright, and stylishly decorated, with lots of white, and contemporary furnishings and features. There’s a chic spa with a small indoor pool, built into the cliff — there’s an outdoor pool too, and a beautiful bar and restaurant.
- Villa Fraulo is a sophisticated hotel, transformed from an elegant palazzo. Set high on the cliffs of Ravello, the villa has incredible views along a great swathe of the Amalfi Coast. Many of the 26 rooms and suites have private balconies and terraces, and the terrace, gardens and infinity pool offer panoramic perfection. Inside the hotel the decor is pale and unfussy, a blend of classic Italian design and contemporary simplicity. The food is excellent too.
For an Amalfi Base
- The Hotel Marina Riviera, is a handy, relaxed base in pretty Amalfi, with fantastic sea views from its terrace and rooftop pool. It’s a good size, 32 rooms, but with facilities just that bit more spacious than the room number suggests. The rooftop pool and terrace have ocean-views, as do the rooms, which also have tiled floors, patterned linens, domed ceilings, and archways worth looking through. Romantic to the core, but with enough space to welcome families too.
For Foodies
- Il San Pietro di Positano is a truly spectacular five star hotel in an almost impossible looking location, built into the cliffs overlooking Positano. Among its numerous charms are three restaurants, all quintessentially Italian, and one with a Michelin star. Go all-out gourmet, or dine beachside — you’ll not be disappointed. As well as the views and the food, San Pietro is a beautiful example of historic Italianate style: think tiles, pillars, archways, and ornate details, and it has both a pool and tennis courts cut into the cliffside.
- Ravello’s Palazzo Avino oozes 1930s Italian film star glamour, with five stars worth of luxury detailing, from the pastel pink facade complete with pillars to the white decor. Plus there's the two Michelin-starred restaurant, the grassy pool terraces with a view and the open-air gym. The views are exceptional too.
Honeymoon Classics
- The Villa Cimbrone appears in many a wedding scrapbook, and is regularly numbered on lists of the world’s ultimate wedding destinations. Its views really take your breath away, its grounds and gardens are photographic perfection, its restaurant has a Michelin star, and it has just 19 rooms and suites, all of them uniquely glorious. But it’s also historic, hosting renowned politicians, aristocrats and artists, from Churchill to Hilary Clinton, E.M. Forster to DH Lawrence, Strachey to Keynes, Crick to Piaget, and Elliot and Woolf and the rest of the Bloomsbury Group.
For an Intimate Escape
- Just along the coast from Positano, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, is the Villa TreVille, an elegant villa-with-a-view converted into a 15 bedroom suite hotel. Each of the rooms is beautifully decorated with memorable features, like handmade tiles, Venetian lighting and individually curated art and libraries. You’ll feel like the guest in the home of a very lucky acquaintance, one with a private beach.
- Picturesque and intimate, Praiano's Casa Privata is a seven room property surrounded by beautiful landscaped gardens full of lavender and roses, lemons, cypresses, and fountains, all tumbling towards the sea on a gently terraced slope. Halfway down there’s a secluded pool, and at the base of the cliff there’s a private beach. Each of the seven rooms is airy and spacious, decorated simply and traditionally with dark wood and a colour palate of warm naturals. They’re all unique, and some have private sitting areas and terraces. Meals on request.
- La Casa di Peppe is a six room, boutique-style pick in pretty Positano, with fantastic views of the Amalfi Coast in both directions. This is an easy choice for families, there are great facilities onsite, and plenty of space, but we also recommend it as a tranquil hideaway. No restaurant, but there are plenty nearby.
For a Beach Break
- The Hotel Le Agavi has all the hallmarks of a classic beach break hotel: the breezy blue and white decor including patterned tiles; the pool, restaurant, bar and terraces with views of the sea and Positano; the private, sea-view balconies; and a private beach — this time on the end of a funicular taking you to the bottom of the cliff!
- Borgo Santandrea, in Conca dei Marini, offers more of the same, but with a mid-century Modern edge. It’s the complete Amalfi Coast package: a cliff-edge postition, complete with a terraced garden and infinity pool, a small arc of private beach, perfectly cool blue and white decor, and views that will live you forever. There are 45 rooms and suites, and, despite the modest size, Borgo Santandera has three restaurants, all serving authentic, regional cuisine. There’s also a chic bar and library.
For a Spa Break
- Former convent turned luxury hotel, the Monastero Santa Rosa Hotel & Spa has views nothing short of celestial from its clifftop location. Each of the hotel’s 20 rooms and suites has an incredible view too, overlooking the terraced gardens and infinity pool, where there are lots of places to relax and appreciate life. The spa is just as refreshing as you could wish, with a tepidarium, hammam. a whirlpool bath, and massages and beauty treatments using the exclusive Santa Maria Novella lotions and potions. Simple poolside lunches are served, but there’s also a gourmet restaurant and terrace bar. Seriously spoiling.
For Families
- Miramare is idyllically positioned mid-way up the tumble of Positano’s buildings, 210 steps above the beach. This was one of the first hotels in Positano, and offers accommodation in 16 luxurious, sea-facing suites, with private terraces offering views considered spectacular even by Positano’s high standards. Expect terracotta floors, antiques, and a spectacular glassed-in terracotta-terrace with a huge bougainvillea plant creating the shade.
- The Grand Hotel Tritone is one of those wonderful Amalfi Coast buildings that seems to defy gravity, jutting out of the cliff so that almost all of its 60 rooms and suites have views that will take your breath away. The gorgeous pools, terraces, bars and restaurant have incredible views too. The decor is Amalfi Coast perfection, with plenty of white and accents of marine blues and greens; tiles and potted plants feature too. Below the hotel, on the water, is its private beach, complete with a rock pool, beach bar and cafe, and a jetty.
For Great Value
- The Belvedere in Conca dei Marini may look plain from its roadside location but once inside you step into a different world. With peerless views over the Amalfi Coast, steps leading to a private beach, bedrooms styled with old fashioned Italian charm, and a dining terrace made for lingering, you’ll find yourself very quickly seduced. Family-owned and with a pool too — the perfect base for exploring the region, or doing very little at all.
- The Villa Yiara is a nine room guesthouse perched mid-way up Positano’s cliffs. The decor is white simplicity, with a touch of yellow, and each room has a glorious private terrace-with-a-view. There’s no restaurant, but they do offer an excellent breakfast, and there are plenty of places to eat nearby.
Best B&Bs
- La Maurella is a delightful, family-run B&B in a peaceful Praiano spot, directly overlooking the sea. It has just five charming rooms, all individually decorated and featuring lots of white and pale wood, the best with private balconies. There’s also a sun-soaked terrace, and a pool-with-a-view. A delicious breakfast is served on the terrace every morning,

Travel Information
- Naples Airport is the nearest airport. If you’re not picking up a car, or being picked up in a car, the most likely way to edge towards the coastline is on the train from the airport to Castellammare di Stabia, or all the way to Sorrento. There are buses running up and down the coastline too.
- If you plan to hire a car, which we would advise if you want to get out and explore further afield, we recommend you visit our online partner Rentalcars.
- The Amalfi Coast is extremely popular in summer, it’s hot and sunny, as well as being picturesque. Daily maximum temperatures are high in July and August, averaging out at about 30° C, so if you’re not so good in the heat you might want to plan your visit for May, June or September, when you’ll still have plenty of bustle, and plenty of sunshine. if you want to swim in the sea plan for September.
