About Beppu

The undisputed gem of Japan's hot spring resort scene, Beppu is a wonderful destination for travellers in search of restoration and rejuvenation. Nestled in Kyushu Island’s Oita region, Beppu boasts a whole host of accommodation options, suitable for a range of tastes and budgets. The hillside city overlooks the coast at Beppu Bay, and many of the best places to stay in Beppu offer striking sea views.

International vistors to Beppu are drawn by the same natural wonders which have appealed to the Japanese for hundreds of years: warm steam rising from the earth to create the perfect conditions for onsen-bathing. Venture into the hills to bathe in different springs, tour the iconic Hells of Beppu — seven boiling hot springs — or unwind in communal baths and private tubs at your hotel. Hike up nearby Mount Tsurumi for spectacular views (which can also be enjoyed from atop Beppu Tower), stroll along the beachfront or explore the shops, bars and eateries of this lively university city. The Beppu Traditional Bamboo Craft Centre is well worth a visit, too.

Alongside their hot springs, most hotels also feature spas with rejuvenating massage treatments, as well as restaurants serving fabulous regional specialities. Many of the best places to stay in Beppu are intimate traditional ryokans, though we also have some swish, modern favourites on our list!

The Best Places to Stay in Beppu

For a Traditional Ryokan

  • Yamada Bessou offers 11 simple, traditional rooms in the city centre. Expect tatami matting on light wooden floors, and paper shutters framing views of the tranquil gardens. The fantastic regional fare and hot springs are real highlights. A classic ryokan experience.
  • Kappo Ryokan Sennari is another intimate property, with just eight guestrooms in central Beppu. A classic ryokan with hot spring baths and delicious seafood, this is a lovely spot for couples or quieter groups. Rooms feature tatami matting, paper screens and futon beds.
  • Beppu Showaen takes the classic ryokan concept to the next level with individual Japanese houses set amidst lush, manicured grounds. Each house features tatami matting and futon bedding, beautiful garden views and an in-room or open-air hot spring bath. The multi-course gourmet Japanese meals are exceptional — especially when served in the privacy of your own restful hideaway. A charming choice for romantic couples or families and small groups.

For Ocean Views

  • Umikaoru Yado Hotel New Matsumi is a lovely traditional hotel with both communal and private hot spring baths. Gaze out to sea whilst immersing yourself in the restorative waters before retreating to your tatami-matted room. A classic ryokan with impressive sea views and large family rooms. Simple and authentic.
  • Amane Resort Seikai fuses cool, contemporary design with traditional Japanese elements to create a luxurious sea-facing base. The 46 rooms and suites are spacious and offer family-friendly options — some also have private terraces with their own open air baths. Unwind at the spa or hot spring baths, and dine on exemplary regional cuisine at the water's edge. Smart and soothing.

For a Swish City Stay

  • Suginoi Hotel is an enormous high-rise hotel in the hills overlooking Beppu and the sea. Spacious rooms, multiple swimming pools, a bowling alley, hot springs and a spa make this a top pick for families, groups or business travellers. Imposing and impressive.
