About Altura

Forty minutes east of Faro, Altura offers a tranquil, rural alternative to the Algarve's bustling coastal destinations. A little village close to the Spanish border, it has long attracted relaxed couples, families and groups of friends. Most of the best places to stay in Altura are rural properties surrounded by olive and orange groves; the beach is within easy reach, but a sense of quiet escapism pervades.

That said, Altura is known for its  its stunning beach, Praia da Altura, which stretches along the extensive Cacela Velha coastline. With its wide sandy shores and crystal-clear waters, the beach will delight sunbathers, swimmers, and water sports enthusiasts. Enjoy bird watching, cycling and hiking in the surrounding nature reserve, either solo or with an expert guide.

Venture to the historic town of Castro Marim, with its medieval castle and fascinating salt pans, or fill your bags with fresh produce from the vibrant markets held in nearby towns during the summer months. Foodies will adore the flavoursome organic cuisine served at the best places to stay in Altura — as well as the unhurried pace of life in this attractive corner of the Algarve.
