About Getaria

A gorgeous medieval fishing village tucked on a spit of land between two sandy beaches, Getaria is an appealingly laid-back destination. Just 30 minutes’ drive west of San Sebastián, the town is also famed for its superb seafood and distinctive Basque white wine. There’s a good choice of characterful accommodation options in the area, too. Our pick of the best places to stay in Getaria highlights a charming family-friendly spot as well as a romantic hideaway.

Stroll through the pint-sized village centre for a sense of its rich history, popping into the the Church of San Salvador, admiring the medieval walls and perhaps catching a Basque musical performance during the summer festival season. Getaria is not only the hometown of Juan Sebastian Elcano, the first man to circumnavigate the earth, but also that of Cristóbal Balenciaga, whose fabulous collections are immortalised at the village's Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum.

Most of the action in Getaria is clustered around the fishing harbour and the beaches. Spend your days swimming and sunbathing before tucking in to mouth-watering grilled fish at a nearby seafood eatery. If you're interested in food and wine, head up into the rolling hills behind the village for tours and tastings at a Getariako Txakolina winery. The village is also on the Camino de Santiago’s Northern Way, so be aware that the best places to stay in Getaria often fill up fast during the summer months.
