Dubbed ‘La Isla Bonita’, La Palma is the most lush and green of the Canary Islands. A land of dramatic contrasts, La Palma’s northern portion is covered with wild forests, whilst its south is dry, volcanic and almost lunar-like. Popular with outdoorsy travellers, the island has a more low-key feel than some of its party-going neighbours, and a smaller choice of accommodation options. There are, however, some real gems; our Gurus’ list for the best places to stay in La Palma highlights our favourites.
Culture aficionados will be intrigued by pretty Santa Cruz de la Palma, which boasts a bustling port as well as a charming historic quarter. Much of the town was built in the 17th Century, and its characterful architecture has been carefully preserved, housing government institutions, arts venues and cultural organisations. Other lively towns include Los Llanos and Tazacorte, both within easy reach of the coast for sunbathing, swimming and water sports.
Venture beyond La Palma’s picturesque towns and villages to soak up the magic of its rugged and unspoilt landscapes. The Caldera de Taburiente Natural Park’s steep ravines, waterfalls and pine forests are spectacular, as is its two-million-year-old volcanic crater. Keen hikers and mountain bikers will adore the Route of the Volcanoes in the Cumbre Viejo Natural Park. The beautiful Roque de los Muchachos viewpoint, on the other hand, is the highest point on the island and a top spot for stargazing. Kick back at one of the best places to stay in La Palma, or on the island’s striking sandy beaches after big days of adventure.
