About Plasencia
Set on a curve of the Jerte River, hilltop Plasencia is a thriving market city with over a thousand years of history. Founded by King Alfonso VIII of Castile in 1186, the city is surrounded by impressive fortified walls topped with 70 turrets and eight gates. Popular with history buffs from within Spain and further afield, the city is also on the Ruta de la Plata, an ancient pilgrimage and trading route. A fascinating city in Extremadura, Plasencia boasts a growing number of attractive hotels and affordable guesthouses. Our Gurus recommend booking a room at a beautifully converted townhouse hotel, regarded by many as the best place to stay in Plasencia.
The city’s historic centre is studded with marvellous landmarks, perfect for admiring whilst on relaxed strolls in the sunshine. Particularly striking, Plasencia Cathedral is an unusual combination of two cathedrals, one dating back to the 12th Century, and the other constructed during the Renaissance. Other highlights include the well-preserved San Nicolás Church, the 15th-century Palacio del Marqués de Mirabel — now a hunting museum — and the Convento de los Dominicos. Take a guided tour for more of a sense of the city’s history, before kicking back with a glass of wine at a nearby eatery.
Venture beyond the city walls to see the striking Plasencia Aqueduct, and to enjoy picturesque riverside walks and boat trips. The best place to stay in Plasencia is within walking distance, well-placed for unwinding before an evening out.
