About Brockenhurst

Brockenhurst is the largest village in the New Forest, but still comes complete with wild-roaming ponies, donkeys, deer and cows, welcoming pubs and restaurants, and the classic, terracotta-coloured New Forest main street. The best places to stay in Brockenhurst are a wide ranging bunch. We've discovered boutique B&Bs, beautiful country house hotels and of course the original Pig!

Brockenhurst is a superb destination for a weekend in the country, or a quick country mini-break. There’s a train line to London (the journey from Waterloo is only an hour and a half), so there’s plenty of time to dash down on a Friday in time for dinner at one of Brockenhurst’s excellent pubs or restaurants.

In addition to the lush surrounds of the New Forest, Brockenhurst is close to Beaulieu and the National Motor Museum; to Lymington, which is one of the ferry ports for the Isle of Wight; and to the fantastic naval museums of Portsmouth.

Just don't forget that the New Forest is an exceptionally popular destination. If you want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Brockenhurst either in the peak summer months or school holidays, you'll need to do your research and book well ahead.

The Best Places to Stay in Brockenhurst

For A Country House Escape

  • Rhinefield House Hotel is a grand Gothic-meets-Tudor country house, complete with many chimneys, a very grand conservatory, and huge windows. The House is surrounded by elegant landscaped gardens, where there are plenty of tables laid out for guests. Inside are 50 rooms and suites, including grand ‘feature suites’, complete with four-poster beds, glorious views and roll-top baths. Dining comes in all shapes and sizes too, with the smart 2 AA Rosette Armada Restaurant, or the more relaxed Conservatory. When the weather is fine we recommend you dine on the terrace. And don’t forget to use the swimming pool!
  • Careys Manor Hotel & Spa is an historic, wood-panelled, 18th-century manor house, tucked away in mature, leafy grounds. Inside are a good range of rooms and suites in various styles, plus a chic restaurant known for its modern British cuisine and championing of local produce. The spa is Thai style, with a huge indoor swimming pool, and an impressive treatment menu.

For Families

  • The New Forest has a number of historic houses, one of them being New Park Manor — it was Charles II’s hunting residence. These days there's a welcoming atmosphere for all ages and great facilities including croquet lawns and a cinema. The 21 rooms and suites offer a range of accommodation, and there's a large pool (open to all ages) in the spa. The restaurant offers traditional, English fare.

For a Pub-with-Rooms

  • The Huntsman of Brockenhurst is a smart pub-with-rooms in a fantastic spot just a short walk from the station. Downstairs is the pub and rather chic restaurant, which serves British classic and pizzas from a wood-fired oven; upstairs are 13 rooms, decorated with a mix of classic and contemporary details, with brightly coloured bathrooms and a stylish vibe. The terrace and garden are a welcome addition come sunny days, and children are welcome.

For Great Value

  • Cottage Lodge is a 15 room eco-hotel, with a forest theme, and walking trails starting right from the hotel door. The beds, many of them four-poster, have been crafted from local timber, as has some of the other furniture, and there are wildlife themed decorations. The best boast a balcony too.

Best B&Bs

  • Daisybank Cottage is a chic little Arts and Crafts house turned welcoming, seven room B&B. Each of the rooms is uniquely designed and decorated, some with more of an Arts and Crafts feel than others, but all with a clean, cream colour palette and muted coloured details. We favour the rooms with roll-top baths, and the one that opens out onto the pretty garden.

Travel Information

  • The closest airport is Southampton Airport, which is about 25 minutes away, both by car and train. If you’re coming via London, Brockenhurst is only an hour and a half on the train out of Waterloo.
  • If you want to hire a car we recommend you visit our online partner, Rentalcars.
  • Brockenhurst is busiest during the spring and summer months, but this part of the world is a great place to visit in the autumn and winter too. Whenever you plan to visit there’s a decent chance you’ll see some rain — with more wet days in autumn and winter — so it’s definitely worth packing your waterproof gear, even if you’re visiting in the height of summer sunshine.
