About Chagford

Perching peacefully on a wooded hillside along the northern side of Dartmoor National Park, Chagford is a pretty village with a church, pubs and inns, and a wealth of family-owned independent shops. Some of the best places to stay in Chagford are the pubs and inns around the charming church made from local granite, but we also have recommendations outside town, in converted castles, manor houses, or farms.

Chagford is an obvious base for walkers and hikers exploring Dartmoor on foot, but this dramatic backdrop can be romantic, as well as inspiring, so it’s definitely worth considering as a mini-break location.

The spectacular moors are all around the town, but in Chagford itself there are sites too: the church dates from the 13th century, and one of the old thatched cottages, Endecott House, was home to one of the Pilgrim Fathers, before he set off for the New World. The town is also becoming a bit of a foodie mecca, showcasing a plethora of local produce and with an increasing range of buzzing cafes and restaurants. Don't miss the weekly farmers' market!

This part of England is extremely popular during the peak summer months. So if you're planning a visit in July or August and want to guarantee a room in one of the best places to stay in Chagford, do your research and book well ahead.

Newquay Airport is probably next closest, around an hour and a quarter away by car or taxi, or five hours by public transport. • Chagford is a picturesque town to visit in any season. It’s beautiful under spring flowers, summer sunshine, or even a sprinkling of winter snow. Chagford is most popular in the warmer months, because that’s the most pleasant time to hike, but out here on the moors the weather is known for being incredibly, and suddenly, changeable, so expect rain and fog whatever time you visit. Expect temperatures into the 20°Cs during the summer, and around 5°C during winter.
