About Monterey

A Californian coastal classic, laid-back Monterey is all about dramatic views of the crashing Pacific Ocean waves, fantastic wildlife and stacks of outdoor activities. An ever-popular seaside escape, Monterey boasts a wide array of accommodation options, from simple B&Bs to luxurious hotels fit for a range of budgets. Our pick of the best places to stay in Monterey includes characterful inns with antique furnishings and cosy log fires, romantic sea-facing hideaways, and a luxurious family favourite, with plenty for everyone to do.

Set on a beautiful stretch of one of the world’s most coveted coastlines, Monterey is a fabulous stop on a Californian road trip, or a lively base for active explorers and history buffs. Walk, run and cycle along the extensive paths which follow the curves of the seafront, or head to San Carlos Beach for scuba diving. There are boat tours, fishing and whale-watching out on Monterey Bay, too, as well as great kayaking and quiet picnics to be had on Del Monte Beach.

Step back into the past at the Monterey State Historic Park, where you can discover the Pacific House Museum, the nearby Custom House and the Old Whaling Station. Pick up a self-guided walking map, or take one of three daily tours to learn from a knowledgable guide. Downtown Monterey is also well worth a stroll, with restored Spanish and Mexican edifices to admire. The famed Cannery Row — which, in the 1930s, made Monterey the sardine capital of the world — is now home to shops, eateries and bars, where you can stock up on souvenirs or enjoy a lively night out.

The town’s biggest attraction has to be the renowned Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a brilliant aquarium which protects everything from majestic whales to forests of sea kelp — and makes for an excellent family day out. Peer at jellyfish and dolphins, see sharks and tuna zipping through the waters, and experience a whole variety of natural habitats. A top-notch spot for curious travellers of all ages!

Journey from Monterey Bay to beautiful Big Sur or Pebble Beach, visit stunning State Parks, play golf on impressive courses and surf the waves, enjoying all the wonders of the Californian coast. Whether you're an outdoorsy family or a relaxed couple looking for a heritage getaway, the best places to stay in Monterey are charming, friendly, and filled with personality — promising a marvellously memorable trip.
