About Occidental

A laid-back farming town in the heart of California’s beautiful Sonoma County, Occidental is a wonderful destination for a tranquil escape and the chance to tour the area’s acclaimed wineries. There is a small selection of intimate accommodation options in town and the surrounding countryside, including charming B&Bs and lovely restaurants-with-rooms. The best places to stay in Occidental are small and cosy, perfect for an escape as a couple or with friends.

Lined with graceful nineteenth-century buildings, Occidental’s main street is a great place for a stroll. The farmers’ market brims with excellent local produce, and there are regular musical performances and quirky crafts on show, too. The town is especially pretty when decorated for Christmas! The striking architecture and delightful eateries of trendy Healdsburg and Sonoma are also easily accessible by car.

Most travellers come to Sonoma County for the wineries, and there are tours and tastings aplenty at nearby vineyards. If you’re keen on more active outdoor pursuits, you can cycle between wineries, enjoy picturesque hikes, a round of golf, or fishing and kayaking on the nearby Russian River. Horse rides through Armstrong Woods State Park are also popular, as is sailing at Bodega Bay, just 20 minutes from town.

Retreat to one of the best places to stay in Occidental for absolute relaxation after big days of wine and adventure.
