About St Simons Island

A picturesque barrier island set between Savannah and Jacksonville, St Simons Island is famed for its beautiful natural scenery and abundance of fascinating historic sites. Balmy, laid-back and easily accessed via a causeway from Brunswick, this is a popular destination for families, groups and romantic couples looking to unwind on the beach or enjoy an active outdoorsy holiday. Accommodation options range from tranquil hideaways to big beach resorts, fit for a whole host of tastes and budgets. Some of the best places to stay on St Simons Island are also known for having their own golf courses — a real treat for golfers!

History buffs will find intriguing heritage sites throughout St Simons Island, which was the landing place of Georgia’s first British settlers. Arriving in the 1730s, the community built Fort Frederica National Monument to ward off potential attack from the Spanish in Florida, as well as Christ Church — now rebuilt — and the striking Wesley Memorial Gardens. Later, the island came to be dominated by sea cotton plantations. The Hamilton Plantation makes for especially thought-provoking visiting, with its carefully restored slave cabins and expansive gardens.

The island is criss-crossed with great cycling and hiking trails, and brims with verdant landscapes. Many of its towering oak trees were felled to build 18th-century US warships, and some later featured in the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. Those that remain are wonderful for a shady picnic, and a popular spot for summer festivals. Venture to St Simons Lighthouse for panoramic views over Jekyll Island, Brunswick and the surrounding coastline, and to 600-acre Cannon’s Point Preserve for wildlife-spotting aplenty. The salt marshes in this part of the island are home to myriad birds, fish, oysters and manatee. The remains of a plantation house are tucked amidst the lush greenery, too.

Visitors will also find beautiful beaches, excellent seafood eateries, bustling resorts, condos and vacation homes. Whatever you have in mind for your ideal Georgia escape, the best places to stay on St Simons Island offer something truly special.
