For a romantic break
- The Château D'Apigne has that classic castle appeal of rounded, turret towers and large fancy windows in a pleasingly symmetrical shape, apart from the elegant ivy. Inside there are just eight rooms, all individually decorated with chandeliers, elegantly patterned wallpaper, cornices, elegant drapes and lots of light from those huge windows. The restaurant has gourmet credentials. Prepare to be charmed.
For the grandeur
- Close to Mont-Saint-Michel and St-Malo, the Château de la Ballue is far enough away from everything to feel like an escape. Surrounded by quiet gardens, complete with a pool and elegant topiary, this 17th-century château has just five rooms and suites, all of them beautifully decorated, with toile du jouy and chintz patterns, marble fireplaces, gilded mirrors and antiques, with a refined country-castle feel. This is a peaceful spot, but well-positioned for many of Brittany’s sights.
- In parklands between St-Malo and Saint-Meloire-des-Ondes, the Château du Colombier is another gorgeous castle-esque château, this time built in 1715 by a ship manager for the East India Company. He favoured high ceilings and religious statuary, grand marble fireplaces and impressive wood panelling. Today the decor is probably less fussy than what he would have chosen, but there are still numerous chandeliers and four-poster beds in the 15 rooms and suites, and some very nice fireplaces too. The fine dining restaurant has beautiful garden views.
For families
- The Château de Locguénolé is a good example of a very family-friendly château. It’s surrounded by a wooded park, but it’s still close to the sea, and has fantastic gardens with plenty to discover within them, a beautiful pool in a sun-trap of a walled garden, a lake with a private pontoon where you can fish or sail, tennis courts, bikes, comfortable family suites and a special children’s menu in the gastronomic restaurant. There are 22 rooms and suites, most of them generously proportioned, with elegant original features, plenty of parquet and antique furniture, and every comfort you need.
For great value
- The Manoir de Kergrec'h is an elegant 17th-century château just back from the coast outside Plougrescant in northern Brittany, surrounded by woods and gardens. There are just 11 rooms in a range of sizes, including doubles, triples, quadruples and suites, so as well as being affordable, this is a good choice for families. The atmosphere is relaxed and refined, and the decor follows similar lines, with some very elegant rooms complete with lovely original features. There’s no restaurant, but they serve a hearty breakfast in the salon. This château hotel is popular with walkers too: the GR34 route goes right past.
- Inland from St-Malo, the Château du Bois Guy is in a beautiful spot, also surrounded by green views, including its own gardens and golf course! In addition to the golf course, this château hotel also has a fleet of bikes for guests, a gym, and runs a range of wellness classes including yoga and pilates. Set in 150 acres of its own grounds, there’s also plenty of room to stroll. Inside there are 25 rooms and suites, decorated in a quirky style that incorporates some of the château's original features and modern furnishings and decoration. The restaurant specialises in local produce.
- Chateau de Mont-Dol is a charming duck-egg blue shuttered chateau in a bucolic setting. Beautifully renovated interiors have a chic French feel with whitewashed walls, hardwood floors and antiques. With noteworthy three-course dinners, this rural stay is also very reasonably priced.
For a B&B
- Chateau de la Villedubois offers an authentic Brittany experience in a 16th-century family estate. Stately interiors are peppered with family heirlooms while rooms are enormous and traditionally dressed. With mature gardens and even a 17th-century chapel, this is a grand rural stay.
For weekend breaks
- Chateau de la Garnison is an imposing chateau set in a secluded rural spot just outside Nantes. Beautifully renovated rooms are the epitome of rural chic; simply designed with soft grey hues, exposed stone walls and the best have freestanding baths. The proximity to the city makes this ideal for an easy weekend escape.
