The Barrio de las Letras is Madrid’s literary quarter, starting loosely around the Plaza Santa Ana and spreading outwards. If this is your first visit to Madrid then staying in one of the best hotels in the Barrio de las Letras will mean you’re close to all the major museums, and in a lively, traditional looking neighbourhood with a very good choice of bars, cafes, restaurants and independent shops.
The Barrio de las Letras is where Cervantes, Lope de Vega and Quevedo lived and wrote, and many others - and you’ll see numerous plaques, quotes and excerpts from great Spanish works on and around the cobbled streets - many of them pedestrianised. The Barrio de las Letras is also known for its small, but picturesque squares and fantastic old shops - if you need to buy a lute, or bespoke silverware then this is the place to come.
When you’re done exploring or strolling to and from one of Madrid’s big name museums - the Prado, the Renia Sofia, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the CaixaForum are all a very short stroll away - head over to C/Huertas, which is the area’s main thoroughfare, and is just lined with tapas bars!
The Hotel Villa Real is an excellent choice if you want to be close to everything! Its traditional facade sits in front of 96 classically elegant rooms, with rich leather furnishings and Roman mosaics.
The Hotel Urban’s original Art Deco facade has been added to - using steel, glass, wood and leather, and the result is rather avant-garde, but also light and beautiful. There are 100 rooms, plus a great restaurant and a fantastic cocktail bar. There’s also a rooftop plunge pool and an art gallery.
One Shot Prado 23 is chic and affordable, in a great location, and occupies a charming, and very Spanish building. There are 42 rooms - some with balconies and terraces, and all with sleek, functional design. Rooms start from just £75 per night.
For a similar room rate you could also stay at Room Mate Alicia. Also in a great location, this hotel has 31 chic, contemporary rooms with floor to ceiling windows, many which look onto the Plaza de Santa Ana. This is a good choice for families too.
