If you want somewhere atmospheric to stay in York, one of your best choices is one of the city’s pubs with rooms. York’s pub accommodation is invariably in an historic building, and one that has played host to the famous and infamous – in one case, Guy Fawkes. As these buildings are of architectural importance, they have retained original features which give them enormous character - but don’t expect hot tubs and swimming pools. York’s best inns and pubs with rooms are usually close to the city centre and, considering their location, also provide good-value accommodation.
York
An atmospheric pub-with-rooms in the heart of the city, opposite York Minster and walking distance to the sights. Darkly cosy, with gas-lit bar and dining-room, bedrooms are elegantly simple with well-worn antiques, some with four-poster beds, plus there's hearty food and real ales.
York (2-4 High Petergate)
This historic Georgian inn, in the shadow of the city’s medieval walls, oozes atmosphere from its cosy bars to its low-ceilinged bedrooms. Food is a cut above the average pub menu and there’s a good range of Yorkshire ales plus a hidden beer garden.
