People fly in from all over the world to stay at this bijou hotel run by its wonderfully idiosyncratic and charming owner, David Carter. From the moment you step inside his 4-storey Georgian home, guests are whisked into an otherworldly place where the play on dark and light is juxtaposed to create an atmospheric and elegant sanctuary. Each room has its own very unique identity, ranging from the downstairs lacquered black walled oriental salon with gold leaf ceiling, where David hosts his bodacious literary evenings, to the first floor parlour with tulle pompom lights, eccentric sculptures, paperweights, satin slippers and strange artefacts, to the radiantly light top floor bedroom and beautiful gilded bathroom with its decadently deep roll top bath and brass lion head wall taps. Staying here’s like an immersive piece of theatre, so loved by those in-the-know, it’s no surprise 40 Winks gets extremely booked up.

Why do people love staying at 40 Winks ? 40 Winks is often described as a home-from-home experience, a place where you are treated not as a paying guest, but as a new friend. Many of our guests are enchanted by the sheer beauty of the house and its unique ambiance, feeling a bit like Alice finding herself in Wonderland - its dreamy fairytale quality offering a welcome respite from the harsh realities of everyday life. For others, the pleasure comes from engaging Mr Carter in some lively conversation over a cup of tea, and the general sense of bonhomie and warmth to be found here. We want our guests to leave with happy memories of their stay, and we work very hard to achieve this. For a few of our guests, staying here can even be a ‘life changing’ experience (not something we can guarantee unfortunately). But what you bring to 40 Winks is also very important, and a willingness to engage and immerse yourself in its atmosphere is essential if you want to discover all its seductive secrets!
