A fine black and white manor house built on the Motte of an ancient castle and set in its own grounds. Rooms are quiet, have large double beds with acceptable mattresses, and are comfortable though not lavishly decorated. One can dine in either the antique plasterwork setting of the Victorian dining room, or the newer and more relaxed conservatory overlooking the lawns and river, and the cooking is interesting if unflashy. This hotel is a warm and welcome overnight stop, or a good base for walking and fishing, and is excellent value either way. Staff of well above average niceness balance the slightly sterile atmosphere of the sitting room.
