Inspired by the nearby Temple of Poseidon on its clifftop above the sea, this low-rise, five-star resort's architectural style echoes ancient themes, with arcaded public areas and splashing fountains surrounded by spacious gardens. On a sheltered, south-facing bay with private beaches, it's close enough to Athens (under an hour by car) to make city sightseeing and shopping feasible. That said, many guests find it hard to tear themselves away from the resort's delights. Rooms are a mix of doubles and family rooms with terraces, bungalow suites with and without private pools, and a handful of breathtakingly opulent villa suites. Eating and drinking options are varied, ranging from a fine-dining Mediterranean a la carte restaurant to Asian, seafood and Greek grill eateries. For families, there's one of the Grecotel group's trademark Grecoland play and discovery centres with activities for children up to the age of 14, plus a children's pool and family bungalows with private terraces. Despite its air of exclusivity and glorious isolation, the Cape Sounio Grecotel Exclusive Resort is only 45 minutes from Athens International Airport, so it's highly accessible – another bonus for families, and for couples seeking a pampering luxury break.
