This high-class resort, located in a beautiful sheltered bay set amongst forested hills will beg you to stay. Accommodation features luxurious beach fronted or garden rooms as well as a choice of four restaurants. Open now for twelve years with 82 suites, the clientele largely comprises of holidaying Brits and Americans. It is designed as a country club with nine tennis courts, a spa, a library and a specialist kids’ area. The foyer is discreet and welcoming. The wicker, wood, cotton and pebbles help blend the interiors in with their environment. It has a half-colonial, half-nautical feel. The Indigo is the pick of the restaurants. The menu caters for the health conscious offering amazing ‘catch of the day’ lunches. The trees virtually cover the architecture showing only the white umbrellas picking up the white waves. In the beach rooms the lapping water and sand is a few feet away. It’s all about luxury amongst whispering waves and swooshing coconut trees. Ideal for honeymooners or families.

24-Hour Room Service: Carlisle Bay, Antigua

At Carlisle Bay the rooms are seriously chic and very lovely areas to hang out in. If you've stayed in a hotel in the Caribbean before, then if I tell you there are no brightly coloured toucan-inspired duvet covers or loud wallpaper you will know that I mean it when I say Carlisle Bay is different. The décor is more reminiscent of a Manhattan loft. There are different sizes of room, but the décor is the same in each. The one bedroom beach suites have a much larger bathroom and are grander than the two-bedroom suites, but these are great if you have kids – and the main bedroom is still really big.

Tucked away on the south coast, outside a local village, Carlisle Bay sits on its own lovely beach and bay. It is quite isolated, which means privacy and plenty of boat trips, but it is within relatively easy reach of the action in English Harbour.

Hotel focus: Carlisle Bay, Antigua

This 82-suite hotel is regularly booked out a year in advance by style mavens. They come to experience the perfect taste of owner Gordon Campbell Gray, who also runs the acclaimed One Aldwych in London. From the gleaming espresso machines in each room to the perfect white sun-loungers, this is a polished hotel. Each suite is coolly decorated in greys and white; they've even traded in the usual purple bougainvillaea for a white variety so there are no unsightly splashes of colour. But it's not a precious hotel - it goes out of its way to woo families with a kids' club (they get film screenings too) and even the most blasé youngsters will be impressed by being taken swimming with stingrays. Parents will be happy to note babysitters come from the hotel's staff.

Right on the beach, with a backdrop of rolling hills and rainforest,this sister property to Beirut's Le Gray hotel is an effortlessly stylish bolthole on the south coast of Antigua. There are two restaurants (East for pan-Asian fusion cuisine; Indigo on the Beach for grills and seafood), nine tennis courts, a swimming pool, a children's club, a library and a private screening room. The Blue Spa has six treatment rooms, plunge pools and a sauna, and holds yoga and Pilates classes. The 82 sea-facing suites all have private balconies or terraces.
