Standing on the course of Hadrian’s Wall, with breath-taking views south over the Tyne valley, this handsome B&B combines a rugged location with luxurious rooms. Choose between more rustic rooms in the owners’ Georgian farmhouse - stripped floorboards, exposed-stone walls, window-seats – or airy, Scandi-style rooms in the separate, modern chalet. While the former perhaps have more character, the latter have spectacular views through picture-windows – particularly in the open-plan breakfast-sitting-room.
The décor is high-spec – Farrow and Ball shades, solid oak or pine furnishings – with a nice touch of local wildlife and landscape photography. Extras, too, are top-quality; tea and home-made cake, books, dvds and maps to borrow, honesty bar with decent wine-list – and both owners, Leah and husband Kevin, are excellent sources for day-trip suggestions. Breakfast is generous – although serving times don’t allow for lie-ins – and home-made soup and cold platters can be ordered in the evening. A lovely relaxing place to return to after a day’s walking or exploring the Roman sites.
