Porto’s Ribeira district is far and away the city’s busiest. Its main thoroughfare, the Rua das Flores, is full of restaurants, trinket shops, and buskers, and at peak times gets shoulder-to-shoulder crowded. What a reprieve, then, to step into the deep, well-like courtyard of Casa da Companhia, to be greeted with a glass of port wine and a plate of cookies, then led high above the street, with a view out over the auburn tiled roofs to the Porto Cathedral.
The 18th-century building was recently renovated, but history was retained in the original balconies, stone alcoves, and steps grooved with three centuries of footfall. The bedrooms are well-lit and airy, some with deep bathtubs, all with handsome black marble in the bathrooms. Double insulated windows cut out the noise of the street—important, as in the afternoon and early evening, it can be significant. Porto’s weather is stable but two fold, either pouring rain or bathed in sunshine. There is a swimming pool for each occasion—one unheated and outdoor, one heated and indoor, plus a sauna, hammam, gym room, and spa treatments.
Port tastings and cooking tutorials are provided, but for the already initiated, the best bet is the restaurant bar, which opens out onto Rua da Flores. Sit in the surprisingly comfortable barrel chairs, order one of the many Porto-inspired cocktails, or from the list of moderately priced Portuguese wines. A la carte meals come in Portuguese proportions, meaning they get larger as the day goes on. Breakfasts are small—the avocado toast was a single poached egg and a couple of slices of avocado on a button of bread; suppers are gargantuan—the monkfish risotto arrived to the table in the same massive copper pot it was cooked in, and will leave you with just enough room for a final glass of tawny.
