Castille Hotel is by no means the grandest on the island, but it has all the charm to make up for it, not least in its elegant reading lounges and inviting hotel staff. This significant 16th-century building could not be better positioned for views and its city-central location, where you can enjoy Valletta’s 320 monuments, all on your doorstep. Even if you’re not staying, La Cave, a brilliant little pizzeria, is located in the basement of the renowned Capitano Giacomo de Robertis’ former palace, which used to house the bakery, stables (now the hotel’s coffee shop), a mill room, a wine cellar and even its own well. The De Robertis roof terrace restaurant has panoramic views across the Grand Harbour and the rest of the hotel offers other delightful prospects such as imposing church domes; Valletta’s historic bastions; the stately Malta Stock Exchange and the Auberge de Castille et Portugal. The only downside is that the room décor is dated and could do with brightening up a bit but, for a cheerful hotel with character, it’s perfect.
