Amenities, style and service at Elia Fatma Hanoum (once the home of an Ottoman aga) are more redolent of a hip city hotel in Barcelona or Berlin than a Cretan resort. Rooms and public areas have WiFi and climate control. In-room perks include espresso makers and sound isolation to minimise noise from the buzzy neighbourhood café and restaurant scene. Each of six bedrooms has its own colour scheme, with pale lemon, hot fuschia, cool blue and accenting wood floors and exposed stonework. Designer toiletries and fluffy bathrobes complement spacious bathrooms with free-standing tubs or walk-in power showers, tiled in earthy reds, yellow and deep green. Four rooms have private balconies. Breakfast is a lavish buffet affair - served in a cool, vaulted lobby patio with a swirling, Minoan-inspired mosaic floor. This space also houses a jazzy bar where trendy cocktails dominate the drinks list. Drinks are also served on the roof terrace, where there are loungers and sun umbrellas. Cosmopolitan couples are clearly the core market here, but families are provided for too. Baby cots and push-chairs can be provided, baby sitting is available on request, and there's a two-level attic suite sleeping four - plus baby.
